Father of Minneapolis Shooting Victim Speaks Out: ‘A Coward Took My Son

Fletcher’s father shared that his son loved cooking, sports, and fishing, cherishing every moment spent with family.

“We will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him, and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming,” Merkel said. Describing Fletcher as “bright, joyful, and deeply loved,” he added, “Give your kids an extra hug and kiss today. We love you. Fletcher, you’ll always be with us.”

Harper Moyski

Ten-year-old Harper Moyski was also tragically killed during the attack, shortly after attending the school’s welcome Mass for the new academic year.

Her family released a heartfelt statement honoring Harper’s memory and calling for change. They described her as a vibrant and loving 10-year-old who lit up every room she entered and was deeply treasured by her younger sister.

“Our hearts are broken not only as parents, but also for Harper’s younger sister, who adored her big sister and is now facing an unimaginable loss. As a family, we are shattered, and words cannot capture the depth of our pain,” the family said in a statement, according to NBC News.

They emphasized that Harper’s death should not be in vain.

“While our immediate focus is on Harper and our family’s healing, we also believe it is important that her memory fuels action. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain. We urge our leaders and communities to take meaningful steps to address gun violence and the mental health crisis in this country. Change is possible, and it is necessary — so that Harper’s story does not become yet another in a long line of tragedies.”

18 Others Wounded

The attack at Annunciation Catholic Church and School left 18 others injured, including 15 children and three elderly adults. Doctors report that at least one of the victims remains in critical condition.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the suspect, 23-year-old Robin Westman, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities stated that Westman legally owned three firearms — a shotgun, a rifle, and a pistol — and that over 100 rounds from the rifle were recovered at the scene.

While no definitive motive has been established, investigators believe the shooter posted a manifesto on Facebook shortly before the attack, which may provide insight into his state of mind.
