Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett drew sharp rebuke from the White House on Thursday after misrepresenting comments about the White House ballroom in a widely circulated social media post.
Crockett, posting on platform X, claimed that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had indicated the construction of the ballroom was President Donald Trump’s “main priority,” suggesting the president was ignoring more pressing national concerns such as the government shutdown, inflation, and the cost of healthcare and housing.
“Today, the White House Press Secretary told the country that this ridiculous damn ballroom is ‘the president’s main priority’ … not reopening the government, not lowering the cost of groceries, not lowering the cost of housing, not lowering the cost of healthcare….building a ballroom,” Crockett wrote.
The White House dismissed her post outright, reportedly calling Crockett a “moron,” highlighting the significant error in her interpretation of Leavitt’s statement. Crockett’s misstep has sparked criticism from both political commentators and fact-checkers, underscoring the risks of taking official statements out of context for partisan points.
This incident adds to Crockett’s growing list of controversial moments on social media, further intensifying scrutiny of her public communications and legislative focus.

This is accurate: Leavitt did state that Trump’s priority was the White House ballroom, but her comment was made in the context of other ongoing renovations, not as a reflection of the president’s full agenda. The omission of this context in Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s post led to widespread criticism.
The official White House rapid response account, Rapid Response 47, responded sharply, calling Crockett a “moron” — a rare instance of direct name-calling from an official White House social media handle. “Not what she said and you know it, moron. Stop lying,” the account posted.
Rapid Response clarified that Leavitt was specifically answering a question about construction projects on the White House grounds. The exchange in full was:
Question: “In addition to the ballroom and the Rose Garden patio, is the President looking at any other renovations or significant kind of projects here at the White House?”
@PressSec (Leavitt): “Not to my knowledge, no, but he’s a builder at heart, clearly, and so his heart and his mind is always churning about how to improve things here on the White House grounds. But at this moment in time, of course, the ballroom is really the President’s main priority.”

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet responded to the Democratic Party’s official X account, which had also propagated the misleading claim, by sharing footage showing Leavitt being specifically asked about renovations. The video corroborates the statement cited by Rapid Response 47 in their reply to Crockett.
The incident highlights that Crockett’s attack was poorly conceived. Observers questioned whether she was intentionally misleading or simply failed to verify the facts, noting that her claim was easily disproven by readily available footage. Critics also suggested it is surprising she posted without reviewing the video, pointing to what they describe as a pattern of poorly calculated tactics by her party.
