Photo of Barack Obama in D.C. Goes Viral After Accidental Photobomb

A Virginia family enjoying a spring morning near Washington, D.C.’s iconic cherry blossoms got a surprise they’ll never forget — an unexpected appearance by former President Barack Obama in the background of their family photo.

Portia Moore, her husband, and their two children, Belle, 4, and Preston, 1, were posing by the Tidal Basin with the Washington Monument rising in the distance when Obama happened to stroll by, unknowingly stepping into their frame.

Moore later shared the photo on Instagram, admitting she didn’t realize the remarkable coincidence until afterward. “I asked my husband what he was saying while I was trying to get the kids to smile, and he said, ‘That was President Obama!’” she recalled.

The family’s photographer, Briana Inell, who has spent over a decade capturing portraits at the cherry blossom site, said she’s used to tourists wandering into her shots — but this encounter was one for the books.

Following the viral buzz online, Obama joined in on the fun, posting a lighthearted message on social media. He apologized for the unintentional photobomb and joked about enjoying the cherry blossoms like any other D.C. resident, saying it was “fun to play tourist again” while admiring the peak bloom.

NBC Washington reporter Joseph Olmo later shared the viral moment on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“OBAMA PHOTOBOMB! A local mom & dad took their kids on a cherry blossom photo shoot @ the Tidal Basin yesterday morning… and look who walked right by!”

The wholesome moment quickly spread across social media, capturing hearts nationwide and adding yet another charming story to the capital’s beloved cherry blossom season.
