For advocates of national sovereignty, any international tax proposal is viewed as a direct threat. In this case, President Donald Trump and his administration stepped in to push back against a bold move by a U.N. agency.
According to Transport Topics, the Trump administration, with support from allied nations, successfully pressured the International Maritime Organization (IMO)—a London-based U.N. body overseeing maritime regulations—to postpone a vote on an emissions-based tax for shipping vessels. The decision to delay came after Singapore, backed by Saudi Arabia, proposed a one-year postponement.
The IMO, which has no constitutional authority to tax U.S. citizens, had drawn comparisons to the tax disputes that sparked the American Revolution due to the audacity of its proposal.
On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed outrage over the plan, calling it a “Global Green New Scam Tax on Shipping” and promising that the United States would not adhere to it in any way. He warned that the tax would lead to higher costs for American consumers and the creation of a wasteful international bureaucracy.
“The United States will NOT stand for this Global Green New Scam Tax on Shipping, and will not adhere to it in any way, shape, or form. We will not tolerate increased prices on American Consumers OR, the creation of a Green New Scam Bureaucracy to spend YOUR money on their Green dreams. Stand with the United States, and vote NO in London tomorrow!” Trump wrote.

Trump’s assertive declaration that the United States “will not adhere” to international taxes appears to have compelled the IMO to back down, highlighting the inability of global bodies to enforce such levies.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the development as a significant achievement. On Friday, he wrote on the social media platform X, “This is another HUGE win. Thanks to his leadership, the United States prevented a massive UN tax hike on American consumers that would have funded progressive climate pet projects. Our country will continue to lead the way and put America FIRST.”

Meanwhile, U.N. Ambassador Mike Waltz credited Rubio’s efforts, describing them as decisive.
“Strong diplomacy that put American business and consumers first WON THE DAY over an ideological carbon tax from the UN and EU,” Waltz wrote.

Elsewhere, maritime journalist and U.S. Merchant Marine captain John Konrad V praised Trump while also acknowledging Waltz’s role.
“BREAKING: TRUMP DOES IT AGAIN. WE WON White House negotiators and Ambassador @michaelgwaltz just forced IMO to delay the global UN CARBON TAX vote by a full year,” Konrad wrote.

As President Ronald Reagan often reminded himself and others, great accomplishments are possible when one does not concern oneself with who receives the credit.
In this instance, Trump and his team successfully pushed back against globalist overreach on behalf of American citizens, leaving plenty of credit to share. Yet, globalists will no doubt attempt similar measures again, for tyranny never rests.
When they do, Trump is poised to remind the world once more that America First is here to stay.
